These days…

So the market is almost upon us. We can’t wait! We SHOULD be telling you what kind of new specialty coffee items we have added… we SHOULD be telling you what kind of gluten free goodies we will have for sale… and we definitely SHOULD be telling you what kind of deliciously fresh produce we will be selling along with our free range eggs (we have lots! but still come early!)… but instead, I will share with you a little something that has been going on around here…

I call it, an “Agricultural War”.

The enemy? The striped cucumber beetle.

The victims? All of our beautiful seedlings… (especially pumpkins, squash… ahem, cucumbers…)

The troops? Our trusty (yet pesky) flock of layers.

The mission? Scratch, peck and devour the living daylights out of that beetle’s life cycle.

The future?

To be continued…

See you Sunday!

Ah, the market is almost upon us. In preparation I thought I would re-vamp our website, but wordpress is not co-operating with me, or I poured too hefty a glass of wine, or Stella & Sam is not entertaining enough for Hazel, or all of the above… so I will have to leave it at this, for the time being…

We are heavy into our farming, and Ryan is busy fishing… so things are generally… hectic. But, we very much look forward to seeing everyone at the Mabou Farmer’s Market on June 3rd. We will have some new signage, new goodies, and new shirts. Whether Ryan likes it or not!

We should have some fresh veggies and free range eggs available plus our usual specialty coffee rigmarole. I will also have some gluten free baked goods available, but to start I will only have limited quantities, so come early! Looks like some white, cinnamon and raisin, and multi seed loaves along with chocolate chip cookies, seasonal muffins (rhubarb anyone?) and brownies…

Looking forward to seeing you,
Hillshore Farm

News News.

Hello Everyone!

I have been exhausting myself trying to ensure that I am producing gluten free baked goodies in the proper manner. I have been doing my research and calling number after number trying to get confirmation that I am following suit. So, I have good news. Everything is checking out. This is very exciting! I now need to work out a few final adjustments… such as, in order to label my goods as “gluten free” I will have to also have nutritional fact charts as well as ingredient listings. I am in the process!

For the time being, I can sell my gluten free cookies and small treats for individual sale. A great time to come check them out would happen to be… Thursday! Hillshore Farm will be teaming up with Kingsville Farm and splitting a table (and giving you a splitting headache… Kingshore Farm? Hillsville Farm? Whattt?!) and selling our espresso and specialty coffee alongside their artisan bread. We will be in the Port Hawkesbury Mall  Thursday, April 5th from 10am-2/3pm on Thursday. So go to Walmart and stop by for a coffee and treat. Or, skip Walmart and just come for a visit!

Regarding our gluten free baking… I have just received test results from the lab technician confirming that all of my Mill Brook flours contain less than 10ppm of gluten. The standard for gluten free is less than 20ppm. This is all new to me, but I am learning… and I take great comfort knowing that for every batch of flour I purchase, I am able to get these test results. Phew.

On that note. We’ll see you Thursday!

Hello Everyone!

It is official. We now have a dedicated gluten free kitchen and are beginning to take special orders. I have two mastered bread recipes that I will be selling for $8/loaf. In the very near future I plan to finalize the rest of my recipes and update our website to contain a Gluten Free page including pricing and more information on our products.

Please note that our products may contain traces of gluten
due to cross contamination. All flours are from Mill Brook and are batch tested to
meet or beat the Canadian Standards for Gluten Free specifications.
Please contact us with any questions regarding our ingredients.

For the time being, here they are…

Gluten Free Cinnamon Raisin, and Gluten Free “White” Bread.

Updates!

I have just updated our website by (sadly) omitting our CSA page and replacing it with a “Pork and Poultry” tab with information on sign up for pork portions and broiler hens.

We have a few more tricks up our sleeves, though for the time being, we will keep you waiting in suspense.

We have our WWOOFER host listing up, so if you (or anyone you know) is interested in a stay at our farm, check it out and pass it on! Search for “Hillshore Farm” under host listings!

All the Best!

We have plenty of eggs to go around. Our hens are laying daily… their house is nice and toasty and Ryan must know how to keep his lady (hens) happy!

If you are interested in assorted brown and white free range eggs, please give us a call 945-2331. Pick up from the farm daily, just call ahead to ensure that we have some on hand, and that we are home!

Thinking About Spring!

Time is nearing to start thinking about the farm again (mental hiatus is over!)… and so begins the rummaging through half empty seed packets and filling out that big order!

We hope everyone is looking forward to hopefully a cooperative spring. I know we are. Ryan is busy building our wwoofer house so we can have some new faces around the farm this year!

Regarding the meat CSA we have decided to take custom orders instead. So if you are interested in pork, chicken or turkey, let us know before the end of April. I will update our CSA information section and give pricing information as soon as possible.

Hope everyone is well!
